I wonder if Art Historians ever over analyze a piece of art, so much so that what they predict is nothing near the truth of what the artist originally intended...
Two words...Critical Theory. Criticism, at least postmodern criticism, in art and literature erases the "author". It is impossible to know the creator's intent unless we can sit with them and ask, which would be gross and spooky in most cases. Once it leaves their hands, it becomes ours. Deep, I know. :) It's the kind of thing that causes kinks in the brain and all sorts of "lexias".
