Who took the fun out of learning?

As an English major, I get to read biographies of various authors, most of whom are dead, and the biographies never fail to talk about the author's education. But I can't help thinking that the education these authors received hundreds of years ago has to be different than our education system today.

I'd be willing to bet that most of them got an education because they wanted to, not because they had to. And I'll also bet that for them, it wasn't just about getting the grade.

I feel like school today is about just that, getting good grades. Are we really learning anything? Or are we so focused on what we have to do to get an A that we forget to digest the information we're given. Do we even take the time to think anymore, or do we just cram?

When I first went back to school, I went because I wanted to learn. But I've gotten so caught up in the rat race of getting good grades, that when I walk into a classroom on the first day of class, I'm not as concerned with the content as I am with finding out how much time I'm going to have to put in to get an A.

Oh to be like that great authors of the past who listened, learned, read, and studied not because they had to, but be because they wanted to.

Oh to have learning be fun again.

Remember that scene in "Good Will Hunting" when Will was trying to help Skylar with her schoolwork? He was just going to give her the answer. She replied that she actually wanted figure it out on her own so she could learn it.

Good thoughts, Greger, as usual.
