She Can Hit Too!

I love watching my wife play softball. Once a week I come home from work, take a quick shower, fill a Nalgene bottle with water, hop in my car, drive to the field, park on the road, pop my trunk, grab our two lawn chairs, walk to the field, kiss my wife hello, give her the water, ask her if there is any score, say hi to the other faithful fans, of which include Mom and Dad, and if I'm lucky, Kate and Ryan bring Bennet, set up the lawn chairs, put my phone in one cup holder and my keys in the other, sit down, relax and enjoy the game for the next hour and a half. It really is good fun, largely due to the fact that my wife is actually good. If any of you have ever seen her throw a ball, you know what I'm talking about. Honestly, she throws better than most guys. She plays second base and is the only girl I've seen turn multiple double plays! But last night, she took it to a whole new level.

With a multiple run rule in effect, Carla's team needed only a few more runs to end the game with a win, and she was up to bat. When she stepped into the batters box the bases were loaded and her opponents in the outfield, seeing that a girl was up, came in closer to the infield. Bad idea! The pitch went up, Carla stepped into it, swung the bat, made contact with the ball...and...she...CRUSHED IT! The ball soared over the outfielders head, landed fair, rolled past the foul line, past the home run fence and kept going! The next thing I noticed was Carla passed second, rounding third, heading home, and the ball wasn't even in the infield yet! With a big smile on her face she crossed home plate! That's right. My wife, the little slugger, hit an in park, GRAND SLAM, to end the game!!! It was unbelievable; truly, truly, unbelievable. I don't think I've seen a more exciting play since she started playing. It was one of those moments where one day I'll look at my kid and ask, "Did I ever tell you about the time your mom hit an in park, grand slam, to end a game? It was incredible." Love, you continue to amaze me!
